While exploring Canadian culture, an important thing that pops up is the weather and what to wear. Canada has been famous for its harsh winters and cold breezes, but not all the seasons are the same. Different parts of Canada face different weather conditions, so a newcomer needs to get used to weather-dependent fashion. Another important part is the activity that you would be participating in, be it study, a professional interview, or even regular day-to-day work.
Common Canadian Wear
Canadians are a relaxed bunch! But they dress mainly according to the weather. Age is also a factor to be considered. You would find most people in t-shirts or hoodies ranging from slim fit to oversized t-shirts paired with denim jeans or cargo pants. While the elderly generation has adopted this trend, you might also find them wearing lumberjack checker shirts. But the only place where you can see a diverse array of fashionable clothes is in clubs. Some still even stick to the gothic dark vibes in their attire, while others have adopted the funky colors from head to toe and everything in between. The US fashion culture has a big influence over Canadian wardrobes too.
The Unpredictable Canadian Weather
The weather here in the north is not an easy pick, especially on the southern side of Canada. While the north of Canada faces the harshness of winter, the south, however, has mixed emotions regularly. So if you are planning a trip or a stay in the southern part of Ontario like me, be sure to pack some extra hoodies.
If you are from a tropical climate, you are sure to be amazed by how the weather changes in Canada. My advice is to pack some thermals, they come in handy, and if you are staying up in the North, then thermals are your best friend.
Dressing Up in Spring
Spring in Canada is different by region but very short in duration. You would still feel the cool breeze passing through. Up north, these chilly breezes can shake you up, while down south, they come with rain and are not entirely unbearable. People usually wear t-shirts paired up with un-buttoned lumberjack shirts or hoodies, with denim jeans and a pair of sneakers. In short, a warm base layer can help you through the day. Don’t be fooled by the bright sunlight beaming from above. Even on a very sunny day with 12–14 degrees positive, you will feel cold if it is your first time around. Spring generally starts in late March, but the weather warms up a little later in May. In the case of footwear, something sturdy, comfortable, and waterproof is always best anywhere you go in Canada.
As of today, I am writing this post. We are entering spring in the south of Ontario. It is either snowing or raining all week, but not heavy snow or rain with small gusts here and there. During times like this, it’s better to wear something warm underneath and carry an umbrella just to be on the safe side from the rain.
Summer by Wear
Summer in the south and west of Canada can feel very warm and humid. It is better to be in lighter gear. Cool cotton t-shirts or polos can look very appealing, adding up shorts can lighten you up. Light trousers and skirts are also popular among girls. Converse and sandals can be pretty popular among everyone. Summer is the best time to get out there and travel places in all of Canada. It’s better to carry a light backpack. Taking strolls in parks just before sundown can cheer anyone up. I cannot wait to get into my summer gear and take a walk down Detroit Riverside here in Windsor, Ontario. The middle part of summer is met with frequent but light rain for longer hours, with heavy rain peaking here and there. This rainy weather doesn’t stay for long—just a week or two and might come back here and there. It’s better to be prepared for that time as well.
Summer is also the time when Canadians go out and festivals take place in popular public destinations. It’s better to dress up light and casual during this time. You can look a little bit fashionable by putting on a hat or cap to provide a little shade for yourself.
Coloring in Fall
Fall is my favorite season in Canada. It’s not that cold or that hot. As fall starts, the leaves of the trees change color and start to fall. Bright orange and red everywhere. During this time, the heat starts to drop in the middle of the season. Early fall is good for lighter wear. Later in the fall, I would bring my spring jacket back, keeping a lighter base layer. Sometimes it is better to have a leather jacket or cardigan on to avoid catching a cold. Jeans, Converse, or sneakers still stay in fashion, with lighter hoodies and long sleeves. Any water-resistant and breathable wear can be a big help. Woolen jackets or sherpa jackets can be fashionable as well. For those who are into knitwear, this is the best season to put them on! Later in the fall, the weather starts to get a little gloomy, with light rain with a shorter duration. During this time, it’s best to gear up for the rain.

In short, it is better to have a warmer or thicker top. You can put on cozy waterproof boots as well to get through the fall.
Wearing Winter
Winter in Canada can be a bit harsh. If you are traveling from a tropical country, you should be highly prepared. Scarves and light gloves can be very useful in the early days of winter. Mid-winter is the time when you need to get your leather or heavy gloves on. It is better to protect your ears with ear muffs, scarves, or hats with ear covers to protect yourself from the cold. Winter is snow-covered most of the time all around Canada, and snow boots are the best friend for this season. They not only protect you from the dense snow but also keep in mind the slippery iced pathways, which would make things a lot worse without snow boots. Make sure your snow boots have a good grip. During this time of the season, it’s better to layer up. There is no alternative to thermals and layers during this time. Thick overcoats or puffer jackets come into fashion during this time as well. People do not usually go out to public places unless it’s a celebration like New Year’s or Christmas. It’s better to be dressed up for these occasions as well. Bright red or green sweaters layered over a warm, breathable base can be handy during Christmas, which makes you not just dressed for the holidays but also keeps you warm. If you do want to go out, puffer jackets can be a big help as well. Winter is also the time for shopping sprees! You can find a really good deal on winter wear during Boxing Day, Black Friday, and before Christmas.

During early and mid-winter, it doesn’t rain too much, but you should be prepared for the flurries that flow during this time. A good waterproof jacket can help during this time. It’s better to be prepared and carry a waterproof winter coat during this time.
Canada has diverse beauty, and every season has a gem to show. The weather, however, can be a little bit difficult to navigate, but once you start living here for some time, you will get used to it!
